How to Care for PE Kit So It Lasts the School Year
A PE kit lives a hard life. It gets sweated in, balled up at the bottom of a bag, forgotten over a weekend, and washed on whatever cycle the machine is already set to. The fabric that makes modern kit comfortable, mostly polyester and a little elastane, is also the fabric most easily ruined by the two things households do out of habit: hot drying and fabric softener. Getting care right is the difference between kit that looks tired by half-term and kit that survives a full school year with the names and numbers still legible. Here is how to keep it lasting.
Wash cool, and wash it inside out
Temperature is the single biggest lever. Performance polyester and elastane blends do best at a cool wash, around 30°C, because hot water can break down synthetic fibers, shrink them, and set creases permanently. A warm wash up to about 40°C is fine for poly-cotton and cotton tees and does a slightly better job dissolving the body oils that cause lingering smells, but there is rarely a reason to go hotter for everyday kit. Lower temperatures also protect printed names, numbers, and logos, which crack and fade faster the hotter and harsher the wash.

Turning garments inside out before they go in the machine does two useful things at once. It puts the sweatiest inner surface in direct contact with the detergent, which is where odor actually lives, and it shields the printed outer face and colors from abrasion against the drum and other clothes. For a program where every shirt carries a printed school crest or a pupil’s name, that one habit measurably extends how long the decoration looks sharp. Treat the temperatures above as indicative; the garment’s own care label always wins if it says something stricter.
Skip the fabric softener, rethink the detergent
Fabric softener is the most common mistake in caring for performance kit, and it is worth being blunt about. Softener works by leaving a waxy coating on the fibers, and on moisture-wicking fabric that coating does exactly the wrong thing: it clogs the structure that pulls sweat away from the skin, so the kit wicks less well, and it traps bacteria and odor rather than releasing them in the wash. The result is a shirt that feels softer for a day and then smells worse for the rest of its life. Leave softener out entirely for anything synthetic, and use dryer balls if you want a softer finish.
Detergent choice matters less but still helps. A normal dose of a good detergent is plenty, and there are sport-specific formulas designed for synthetics that target body-oil odor more effectively than standard powders. Using more detergent is not better; excess can build up in the fibers and hold onto the very bacteria you are trying to remove. If kit still smells after washing, adding about half a cup of white vinegar to the rinse breaks the bond between oils and fabric, and a short pre-soak in cold water before washing handles the worst offenders.
Air dry when you can, low heat when you cannot
Drying is where good kit quietly dies. The elastane that gives shorts and leggings their stretch is heat-sensitive, and a hot tumble dryer degrades that elastic over time, which is why waistbands go slack and garments lose their shape long before the fabric wears through. Air drying on a rack or hanger is the gentlest option and costs nothing, and for a school issuing kit in bulk it is the advice most worth passing to families. When a dryer is unavoidable, use the lowest heat or a no-heat cycle and take the kit out promptly, because leftover heat and crushing are what set wrinkles and cook in odors.

The composition chart above explains why the same rules apply across most of the kit. A performance tee is often entirely polyester, shorts and leggings add elastane for stretch, and even a poly-cotton shirt is majority synthetic. Both polyester and elastane dislike high heat, so a single low-heat habit protects the whole set. The blends shown are indicative; the exact percentages vary by garment, but the direction is consistent, and it points at cool washing and cool drying.
Protect the print, and iron with care
Decoration is usually the first thing to look worn, so it deserves specific handling. Beyond washing inside out, keep printed kit away from direct high-heat ironing. If a garment genuinely needs pressing, use the lowest synthetic setting and place a cloth between the iron and the fabric, and never run a hot iron straight over a printed name, number, or transfer, which can melt or lift it. Heat-applied decoration in particular is vulnerable here, so when in doubt, press the reverse side through a cloth rather than the printed face.
Build habits that make kit last longer
Most of what wears kit out is time spent damp and dirty, not the washing itself. Encouraging pupils to air out kit before it goes back in the bag, and to wash it promptly rather than leaving it screwed up over a weekend, prevents the bacterial buildup that causes set-in smells no wash fully removes. For a school running a kit program, a short care note issued alongside the uniform does more for longevity than any single fabric upgrade, because it changes the daily handling that actually determines lifespan. Wash cool, drop the softener, dry low or on the line, and protect the print, and a well-made PE kit will comfortably see out the year and often several.
