The short version: Custom high school PE uniforms are usually ordered in two waves: pre-stocked classroom inventory for incoming freshmen (300–600 sets) and re-orders mid-year as students grow or replace lost items. We make the standard short-sleeve tee + 7″ mesh short combo, plus optional sweatshirt and sweatpant for cold-weather schools. Pricing scales aggressively with quantity; standard MOQ for a custom design is 50 sets.

Why high school PE programs choose custom over generic

Generic athletic-store PE uniforms are cheaper at the unit level, but they create problems for high school PE departments. Students arrive in mismatched colors and styles, locker-room theft is harder to investigate because everything looks the same, and the program loses any visual identity in school photos or sports-day events. Custom high school PE uniforms solve all three: a consistent design, the school name and mascot on every piece, and a unit cost that’s competitive with the generic option at scale.

The other reason high schools standardize: equity. A custom PE uniform purchased through the school’s student-fee structure or athletic budget removes the household-income variable. Every student arrives in the same uniform regardless of what their family can afford, which is a quietly important detail in mixed-income schools.

Procurement: athletic department POs and student fee billing

High school PE uniform orders typically run through one of two channels. The athletic department or the PE department head places a PO using either the school’s athletic budget, the booster club, or a parent-association line item. Some districts route through district-level procurement; we’re set up for that too. We accept net-30 invoicing, can W-9 and provide insurance certificates, and direct-ship to either the school or a district warehouse depending on your protocol.

For schools that bill students individually as part of a PE fee, we can run a parent portal where each family pays directly through a deadline-locked roster. The school doesn’t front the money; the order ships when collections close. This is increasingly common in districts that have moved to consolidated student fee billing.

Lead time and back-to-school planning

August is the peak production window for high school PE uniforms. Most schools want delivery by the first day of class or, ideally, a week before so PE teachers can hand them out at orientation. The realistic ordering windows:

School start Order by Sizing roster locked Ships by
Mid-August start Mid-June Mid-July Early August
Late August / Sept Tuesday-after-Labor-Day Early July Late July Mid-August
Second semester additions (Jan/Feb) Mid-November Early December Early January

If a school is waiting on enrollment numbers to confirm the order quantity, the practical thing is to lock the order at 90% of last year’s registered count and re-order the gap in mid-September. Re-orders against an existing spec ship in about 2 weeks.

Frequently asked questions about custom high school PE uniforms

What’s the minimum order quantity for a custom design?

50 sets is the functional minimum for a custom-printed PE uniform with full front-and-back embellishment. Below that, set-up and screen costs make the per-unit price hard to justify. For programs that need smaller runs (varsity spirit pack only, JROTC PT-only), we can quote down to 25 sets at a higher per-unit rate.

How does sizing work — do students try them on?

Most schools collect sizes from incoming students during summer orientation or enrollment paperwork. We provide a size chart with both adult and youth ranges. We recommend ordering 5–10% of mid-range sizes (M, L) as inventory buffer for late additions and replacements during the year.

Will the print survive a full school year of weekly laundering?

Yes. We use plastisol ink for screen prints and tear-away woven labels for sizing. Both are tested through 60+ wash cycles. For schools concerned about extreme wear (year-round PE, athlete daily use), the patch-embroidery option is even more durable than print.

Can we run different colors for different grade levels?

Yes. The most common variation is freshman/sophomore in one color and junior/senior in another, all in the same production batch. Per-unit pricing stays the same as long as the design is identical aside from color.

What about lost or torn uniforms mid-year?

We hold your spec on file and can ship single-piece replacements in about 10–14 days. Most PE departments keep a small inventory of mid-range sizes (M, L) from the original order specifically for mid-year replacements; we recommend ordering 5–8% over.

Do you offer rush production?

Yes — adding 25–100 sets to an existing order can usually happen in 10 business days. Full custom rush orders inside the 3-week standard lead time add 15–20%. We can’t go below 8 business days for a brand-new design with screens and embroidery.

Can the school logo include trademarked items like NFL or MLB-style marks?

Only with appropriate licensing. We don’t produce uniforms with unlicensed pro-team marks. If your school’s mascot happens to share a name or look with a pro team, we’ll review the artwork with you and adjust if necessary.

What about ADA / adaptive PE uniforms?

We carry size options through adult 4XL and can produce adaptive features (side-zipper shorts, magnetic closures, sensory-friendly tag-free shirts) on request. Add roughly $4–$8 per piece for adaptive features.
