Why custom middle school PE uniforms are different from high school

Middle school PE is mandatory in most districts, so every student needs a uniform. That makes the order size predictable and the size distribution wider than people expect — a single 7th grade class will pull from YS through adult M, with a meaningful number of adult-L and adult-XL students.

The other thing that’s different: middle school PE uniforms have to survive a year of locker-room treatment from 11- to 14-year-olds. The shirt goes through 30+ washes a school year, often in cold water with no fabric care, and the shorts get the same treatment. Cheap polyester shirts pill by November. Cheap cotton shorts shrink unpredictably and need to be replaced mid-year. The right spec is a 50/50 poly-cotton blend on the shirt with a screen-printed logo (not a heat transfer that cracks after 10 washes), and a polyester short with elastic waistband and inner brief.

What to customize

For the print, most schools want school name across the front and a small mascot graphic, with the school’s primary color as the ink. Two-color printing (mascot in a contrast color) adds slightly to the per-shirt price and a lot to the photo appeal.

School-store resale: many schools resell the PE uniform to parents at registration. We can structure the quote with a recommended retail price that gives the school a small margin for school store revenue — this is how PE departments fund equipment replacement.

Sizing — the part schools always get wrong

Middle school PE uniform size distribution is wider than most administrators expect. We’ve seen rosters where 40% of 8th graders need adult M or larger, and the school ordered mostly YM and YL because that’s what the previous year’s distribution looked like. The result: a backorder in week three of the school year, kids in mismatched temporary uniforms, and a frustrated PE teacher.

If you have last year’s size distribution data, send it — we’ll build the order around it with a buffer of about 10% in the larger sizes for kids who grow over the summer. If you don’t have data, we’ll build a recommended order based on a typical middle school distribution: 15% youth small, 25% youth medium, 25% youth large, 15% adult small, 10% adult medium, 6% adult large, 4% adult XL and above.

Lead time and the back-to-school deadline

For an August registration, the realistic order window is April through June. Standard production for custom middle school PE uniforms is 4 weeks from artwork approval, plus ground shipping. We can ship to a single school address or split-ship to multiple buildings in a district.

Peak season is June and July — orders placed in those months still ship on time, but artwork approval needs to happen quickly because our queue is at capacity. Orders placed in May tend to have the smoothest experience.

Procurement notes for athletic directors and PE department chairs

We work with PE departments, athletic departments, and district business offices. The procurement path varies by district. Some districts run PE uniforms through general funds. Others run them through athletic department budgets. Others run them through a parent-pay model where the school provides the uniform at cost.

For school-funded purchases, we invoice the district business office against a PO, net-30. We have a current W-9 and can provide insurance documentation. For parent-pay schools, we offer a per-student online ordering portal in the school’s branding, where parents pay individually and we ship to the school for distribution.

Replacement uniforms mid-year

Even the best PE uniform program has students who lose, ruin, or outgrow their shirt mid-year. We offer a no-minimum replacement program: send us a list of students and sizes any time during the school year, and we’ll produce and ship a small replacement batch. Pricing is at the bulk rate as long as your original order was at Tier 2 or higher.

What’s the minimum order for custom middle school PE uniforms?

50 sets. Below 50 we can do a stock blank shirt and short with a screen-printed logo, but the school-spec full customization tier starts at 50.

Can we order just shirts, or just shorts?

Yes. Many schools order shirts custom and use a stock plain short. Some do the opposite for budget reasons. We’re happy to quote either piece individually.

How long does the screen print last in middle school laundry?

50–75 washes for our standard plastisol ink on poly-cotton. The shirt usually wears out before the print does.

Can students personalize their shirt with a name on the back?

Yes, but it shifts the workflow. Send us the name roster and add 5 business days. Per-shirt upcharge is about $3.50.

Do you carry plus sizes and adaptive sizes?

Yes — up to adult 4X and adaptive options for students who need them. Send us the specific needs and we’ll quote.

Can we order in two colors for boys/girls or by grade level?

Yes, no surcharge. Up to four colorways in a single order. Some schools do a different shirt color per grade so students self-sort.

What’s the warranty on the print?

One school year against fading or cracking under normal laundering. Bleach destruction is not covered (always tell parents not to bleach).

How are uniforms shipped — sorted by size?

Bulk cartons by default, with a packing slip itemizing the count per size. If you want them pre-sorted into bundles by student name, we offer that service for orders with a name roster.
